A Letter on Deep Spiritual Struggles - Mack Tomlinson

-------

Deep Spiritual Struggles Are Often Right on Schedule

Recently, I received a letter from a godly, hungry, humble, and dear brother in the Lord who I have fellowship with regularly. With his permission, I want to share it with you and my response.

Dear Mack,

Over the weekend, I dove into John Bunyan's book, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, after seeing you mention it in our correspondence from last week. I wanted to share how I felt after reading it, and along with my wife, I feel you are the only other brother I can really share something like this with, in the hope of getting godly counsel.

The testimony of Bunyan's struggles prior to and after his conversion left me feeling uneasy, uncertain, and troubled about the state of my soul. This is not to say it wasn't a blessing, because much of what I read caused me to rejoice, though it was overruled by this sense of weight on soul. I know this might not be the clearest representation, but some of it is hard to put into words.

Philippians 2:12-13 'Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence, but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure'.
That verse in particular has been sounding in my mind for the past couple of days again and again. I am troubled about myself, my sin, and my weakness to do anything good. I feel crippled and helpless at times.

The uneasiness comes from me looking back over my life. I had prayed with my pastor in his office at a Baptist church in December of 1997 to be saved. I have grown up most of my Christian life hearing his preaching and never really getting even a small picture of the "whole counsel of God" until my desire was ignighted a year ago or so. I have often thought about how maybe I wasn't really converted at 17 years old....maybe it was later on or even much later on (like a year or two ago). Then as I read Bunyan's testimony, seeing his struggles, his fight, but more so the sweetness of the numerous occasions where God illuminated things to him, I began to be greatly concerned, feeling like I have not had such experiences as he had.

I don't want to get into trouble by comparing my life solely with his life, but at the same time I feel a sadness that most of what I have learned is from reading the Scriptures and books; I do not really recall a time where I felt as though the Lord was personally teaching me, revealing or illuminating Scripture to me. Maybe I am off base, as I do feel I have learned much, but still see it as though I learned it from men. I realize also that there are Christians who speak the language very well and know the doctrines, even the doctrines of grace, yet are lost and without Christ. I do not want to be among that number.

Part of my concern and troubled feeling has to do with my life, my fruit...I feel like if I really believed the gospel, the realities / beauties of heaven, the horrors of hell, my union with Christ, and my position in the family of God, then my life would be radically different. I would not worry myself with the temporal, I would surrender my life to a much greater extent, I would give all away, I would be spent for the work of the kingdom, leaving nothing on the table and never looking back.

Even this morning, when I began to pray, I found it hard to pray...I feel like I can't even pray right at times. I also saw in Bunyan's book more of the craftiness of the devil than I had ever considered. I sure do not want to be deceived in thinking I have been born again and I sure do not want to be deceived or "cooled" as Bunyan described so that I am ineffective.

I am nearly to tears, as I type this, as I feel my heart only longs to be with the Lord, but I am utterly incapable of growing, believing, or surrendering. I don't want to be a fake. I know He must do this, but I feel alone right now. Thanks for listening and being there for me, brother. If you have any advice, I would be grateful.

My Reply

My brother,

Your letter is real, special, and very important because it addresses the deepest issues of the spiritual and emotional struggles many Christians go through when they really begin to see and experience the deeper workings of God in their soul.

One thing we need to realize is that we (meaning most believers during the 20th and 21st centuries) have grown up in a shallow atmosphere regarding the depth of spiritual reality that happened in previous centuries. When we first become stirred and hungry for God in a real way, and then begin to read the lives of Christians from the past and see their experiences, we suddenly see that what they went through is often foreign to those of our shallow generation. We read of the deep struggles and spiritual battles of a Bunyan, a David Brainerd, a Robert Murray M'Cheyne or a Jim Elliott, and we begin immediately to say to ourselves, "I've never experienced that; I've never known that kind of conviction of sin, I've never felt the depths that he felt; God has never been that real to me--I must not be a real Christian because I've never experienced what he's talking about."

So when we then begin to compare our experience with theirs, it is here that we can fall into a subtle trap--that of thinking that all Christian experience, if it is genuine, will somehow be uniform--that is, the same always for every Christian. It is true that such struggles do come to lost people when God begins to draw them to Christ and show them they are lost. But also we must realize that different people can and do have differing levels of understanding and experience in their conversion experience, and in their sanctification, growth, and spiritual experiences. There is no set pattern. Some people are overwhelmed mainly by the deepest guilt and sense of evil within them, and feel the wrath of God is going to swallow them up, and are utterly crushed by a sense of vileness and unworthiness. Others are overwhelmed by a sweet sense of the love and free mercy of God in Christ and how free God's grace is, and suddenly the goodness of God deeply leads them to repentance.

It is true that there will be conviction, surrender, self-denial, etc in every genuine conversion, but the level, depth, degree, and even the particular truth that is made real at such times can vary with every Christian. There is no set experience or even one particular emphasis the Holy Spirit always uses in a person's conversion and deeper growth. If the work of the Spirit is compared to the wind, as Jesus told Nicodemus, then there can be gentle breezes at times, stronger currents at times, then even stronger winds, and then sometimes powerful gales of His workings. His work is not uniform or static, though its nature and essence will always be the same. Wind is always wind, whether a small gentle breeze or a tornado or hurricane. The quantity, degrees of intensity, and the resulting effects may vary, but it is still wind. This is God's way with the workings of the Holy Spirit in the souls of men. Experience may vary widely and often does, and we should not compare ourselves with others, which is often unwise and can bring us into bondage and defeat.

Many true Christians do not know exactly when they were saved; the time you think it may have happened is not nearly as important as the reality that a real change has occurred; we don't have to know when--we just have to be able to truly say, "Once I was blind, but now I see." Few people have the kind of experience Bunyan had; if all were measured by his experience, many true Christians would have to be judged as being still unconverted.

The real issue now is, as stated in your own words--"your desire was ignited"; are you now being taught of God? Is truth being made real to your heart that you now rejoice in? Do you hate sin and love the Saviour? It is not just truth to the mind that we intellectually see, but truth ignites our affections and our hearts love Christ and all His truth.

What you are going through is what Jesus meant when he talked about "blessed are the poor in spirit"; the fact is, deep spiritual struggles are often right on schedule in our lives and are the greatest proof one can have of real grace.

The true Christian often feels the way you have expressed; we mourn over our lack, we grieve over our need, we feel utterly incapable--this sense of our utter helplessness in ourselves drives us to Christ and casts us upon Him alone; Unbelievers don't care about holiness or any of these realities; they are not concerned about their hearts, only in the sense of how much more sin they can have; it's the godly ones, real Christians, who feel these things and grieve, become concerned, and then fight the good fight of faith.

What you feel and are going through is one of the best signs you could have--no unbeliever even cares at all about any of these things.

So keep seeking the Lord, keep praying, cry out to Him for grace; He's teaching you to walk by faith, not feelings, etc;

Even the godliest Christians there are often don't feel like praying and feel coldness at times; the very fact that a person is concerned about it and wants to be different is the great sign of having a heart for the Father;

Let's keep talking about this as you need to;

Read the Psalms and pray them; and seek the Lord!

I love you, brother

Christ is All - John Piper

“Jesus Christ is not merely the means of our rescue from damnation; he is the goal of our salvation. If he is not satisfying to be with, there is no salvation.

He is not merely the rope that pulls us from the threatening waves; he is the solid beach under our feet, the air in our lungs, and the beat of our heart, and the warm sun on our skin, and the song in our ears, and the arms of our beloved.”

"Thy Righteousness Is In Heaven" - John Bunyan

-------

“One day as I was passing into the field, this sentence fell upon my soul: ‘Thy righteousness is in heaven.’ And with the eyes of my soul I saw Jesus at the Father’s right hand. ‘There,’ I said, ‘is my righteousness!’ So that wherever I was or whatever I was doing, God could not say to me, ‘Where is your righteousness?’ For it is always right before him.

I saw that it is not my good frame of heart that made my righteousness better, nor yet my bad frame that made my righteousness worse, for my righteousness IS Christ. Now my chains fell off indeed. My temptations fled away, and I lived sweetly at peace with God.

Now I could look from myself to him and could reckon that all my character was like the coins a rich man carries in his pocket when all his gold is safe in a trunk at home. Oh I saw that my gold was indeed in a trunk at home, in Christ my Lord. Now Christ was all: my righteousness, sanctification, redemption.”

JT's Notes from Kreeft's Socratic Logic

Note: Everyone uses logic. We might as well try and use it well! - mv

Some notes from Peter Kreeft’s Socratic Logic (pp. 28-33):

There are three kinds of thoughts, or three acts of the mind:

1. Simple apprehension [understanding a simple term--e.g., "man"]
2. Judging [relating two concepts by predicating one term of the other--e.g., "man is mortal"
3. Reasoning [relating two or more judgments with a conclusion--e.g., "man is mortal; I'm a man; therefore I'm mortal"]

These three acts of the mind result in three mental products:

1. Concepts (the products of conceiving)
2. Judgments (the products of judging)
3. Arguments (the products of reasoning, or arguing)

Expressed logically these are:

1. Terms
2. Propositions
3. Arguments (most commonly, syllogisms)

These logical entities answer the three most fundamental questions:

1. A term answers what something is.
2. A proposition answers whether something is.
3. An argument answers why it is.

These logical entities also reveal three aspects of reality:

1. Terms reveal essences (what something is).
2. Propositions reveal existence (whether something is).
3. Arguments reveal causes (why something is).

These logical entities can be judged logically good or logically bad:

1. Terms are either clear or unclear (=ambiguous).
2. Propositions are either true or false.
3. Arguments are either valid or invalid.

To make a convincing argument you have to fulfill all three of the following conditions:

1. Your terms are clear.
2. Your premises are true.
3. Your logic is valid.

If you want to critique someone’s argument, you have to show an error in just one of the following:

1. They are using a term ambiguously.
2. They are using a false premise.
3. They are committing a logical fallacy (i.e., the argument is invalid; the conclusion does not follow from the premises).

Does God's Sovereignty Really Matter? Part 2 - John Piper

-------

Does It Really Matter That Much if We Believe in the Sovereignty of God? Pt. 2

Ten Reasons Continued

6. The hope that God will give life to those who are spiritually dead depends on it.

"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved."
- Eph. 2:4-5

"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." - John 3:8

7. The well-grounded expectation of answered prayer depends on it.

"Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved." - Romans 10:1
"Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins . . .for the promise is for .=2 0. . everyone whom the Lord our God shall call." - Acts 2:38-39

8. Boldness in the face of seeming hopeless defeat depends on it.

“Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.”
- 2 Samuel 10:12
“Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him, for there are more with us than with him.”
- 2 Chronicles 32:7

9. Seeing and savoring the revelation of the fullness of God’s glory depends on it.

"But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ . . . What if God, desirin g to show his wrath and to make known his power, acted in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy?”
- Romans 9:20–23

10. Praise that matches the fullness of God’s power, wisdom, and grace depends on it.

“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. . . . We will bless the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.” - Psalm 115:3,18
“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.” - Psalm 96:4

The doctrine of God’s sovereignty is an anchor for the troubled soul, a hope for the praying heart, a stability for fragile faith, a confidence in pursuing the lost, a guarantee of Christ’s atonement, a high mystery to keep us humble, and a solid ground for all praise. And oh, so much more. O Lord, turn this truth for the triumph of your saving and sanctifying grace.

Does God's Sovereignty Really Matter? Part 1 - John Piper

-------

Does It Really Matter if We Believe in the Sovereignty of God?

Why Does It Matter? Ten reasons:

1. The good news of God substituting His Son on the cross depends on it.

"Truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place."
- Acts 4:27-28

2. The perseverance of the saints in the fear of God depends on it.

"I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me."
- Jer. 32:40

3. Our progress in holiness now and the final perfecting of all believers in the end depends on it.

"Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." - Philippians 2:12-13

4. The assurance of God's final triumph over all natural and supernatural evil depends on it.

"I am God and there is no other; I am God and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.'" - Isaiah 46:9-10

5. The comfort that there is a wise and loving purpose in all our calamities and losses, and that God does work all things together for our good depends on it.

"Though He causes grief, He will have compassion according to the abundance of His steadfast love . . . Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come?"
- Lamentations 3:32-28

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28

"As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good." - Genesis 50:20

Christ's Sympathy - Octavius Winslow

-------

Christ's sympathy

(Octavius Winslow, "The Tears of Christ")

"Jesus wept!" John 11:35

The Creator of all worlds, the Author of all beings, the Upholder of the universe--raining tears of human woe and sympathy upon a grave!

Oh, there lives not a being in the universe who can enter into our bereavements with the sympathy, the support, and the soothing of Christ!

They were tears of sympathy. His heart was touched, deeply touched, with sympathy for the sorrow of others. He wept because the mourning sisters wept. He mingled His tears with theirs.

This is true sympathy, "weeping with those that weep," making their sorrow our own. How really our Lord does this with His people. So completely is He our Surety--that He takes our sins and infirmities, our trials and sorrows upon Himself, as if they were all and entirely His own. Our sins were so completely laid upon Him--that not one remains charged to the account of those who believe in Jesus.

And our present griefs are so entirely absorbed in Him, that, softened by His love, soothed by His sympathy, supported by His grace--the trial is welcome, the affliction is sweet, and the rod of a Father's chastening, buds and blossoms into delectable fruit.

Bereaved mourner! the sympathy of Christ is yours! The Savior who wept at the gave of Bethany, now shares your grief. Do not imagine that your sorrow is isolated, or that your tears are forbidden or unseen. You have a merciful and faithful High Priest who is touched with your present calamity.

There exists no sympathy . . .
so real,
so intelligent,
so deep,
so tender,
so sanctifying--
as Christ's sympathy.

And if your heavenly Father has seen it wise and good to remove from you the spring of human pity--it is but that He may draw you closer beneath the wing of Jesus' compassion, presence and love.

O child of sorrow! will not this suffice--that you possess Christ's sympathy, immeasurable and exhaustless as the ocean, exquisite and changeless as His being! Yield your heart to His rich compassion!

Will Jesus be regardless of what I feel, and the sorrows under which I groan? Oh no! The sigh that bursts in secret from my heart is not secret to Him; the tear that is my food day and night, and drops unperceived and unknown--is known and remembered by Him!

"You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book."
Psalm 56:8

C. T. Studd: Soldier of the Cross Pt. 2 - Mack Tomlinson

-------

C. T. Studd: Soldier of the Cross, Pt. 2

'If Jesus Christ be God, and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him'.

A full account of Studd's life and work can be found in Norman Grubb's biography, C. T. Studd: Cricketer and Pioneer. C. T. actually had three different missionary careers, first in China, then India, and finally in Africa.

It was while he was in China at the age of 25 that Charlie's full future financial inheritance came to him. He decided, after prayer and searching the Scriptures, that he was to give it all away. On January 13, 1887, he gave 5000 pounds each to the ministries of D. L. Moody and George Muller, then 5000 to be used for the poor of London, another 5000 to Booth Tucker, for the work of the Salvation Army in India, and several 1000 pound gifts to various Christian workers in Ireland and England.

He thought he had given it all away, but later found out he had more inheritance coming, so he then sent several thousand pounds to the China Inland Mission, leaving him with 3400 pounds. It was like giving away millions by today's standard.

Three years after arriving in China, C. T. married a young Irish missionary from Ulster, Priscilla Livingston Stewart. Just before the wedding, Charlie presented the remaining 3400 pounds to Priscilla as a wedding gift. She wouldn't have it. Together they gave the rest of it away for the Lord's work. The theme of their wedding day was, 'United to fight for Jesus'.

One of the main works in China that the Studds did was to open an opium shelter for addicts, who were allowed to stay there for a month. Hundreds came through the shelter and left free from drug addiction, and many came to know Christ and found freedom. Over the eight year period of that difficult ministry, over 800 people came through the shelter and were helped.

After being in China for 10 years, the Studds returned to England in 1894. C. T. had almost died the previous year and it had become obvious it was the Lord's will to return home. As their furlough unfolded, D. L. Moody invited Charlie to the U. S. to take a speaking tour of American churches and universities.

In 1900, C. T. and Priscilla answered God's call to go to India. Charlie's father had expressed on his death bed that he hoped somehow his son would one day go to India. From 1900-1906, C. T. pastored the Union Church in Ootacamund, South India. A remark was made about this church during this period that best describes the work of grace that occurred there: "That church is a place to be avoided, unless a man means to get converted!" There were constant and, at times, remarkable conversions, including military officers and individuals in places of high honor.

When the time came in 1906 to leave India, all four of their daughters had become believers and wanted to be baptized there before leaving India. C. T. baptized the girls himself in a tank in the ground. Among those present for the baptism were an old missionary and his wife who deeply loved the girls, another Baptist missionary couple, and a young British missionary named Amy Carmichael.

The Studds returned to England, not knowing exactly what God had for them. C. T. was now fifty, with some real health challenges. It had been 18 years since their marriage and their mutual surrender to God's purposes. But the greatest venture of all was yet to come, the greatest work of his life--the interior of Africa.

The Studds had no money, and as he was facing real health issues, how could he even consider tropical Africa? Before long, his doctor declined giving his permission for the plans and then the mission committee rejected his request. His answer to the doctor and the committee was, 'Gentlemen, God has called me to go and I will go'. God's ultimate will and C. T.'s determination won in the end, as Charlie labored in the heart of Africa for the next twenty years, establishing the Africa Inland Mission, which later became the Worldwide Evagelization Crusade (WEC).

Studd sailed for Africa on December 15, 1910, and wrote on his first day in the Belgium Congo: 'I know I am the Lord's; I know I only want His glory and the salvation of others and I know He knows it. Best of all, I know God is with us. He talks to me and His blessed Word means more than ever before; He makes me to dare and to do for Him'.

He often faced ongoing challenges that only God could meet and would often say, 'Funds are low again, hallelujah! That means God trusts us and is willing to leave His reputation in our hands'.

Concerning the romance of the mission field, Studd once commented:

"The "romance" of a missionary is often made up of monotony and drudgery; there often is no glamor in it; it doesn't stir a man's spirit or blood. So don't come out to be a missionary as an experiment, for that is useless and dangerous. Only come if you feel you would rather die than not come. Lord Wolsey was right: "A missionary ought to be a fanatic or he encumbers the ground." There are many trials and hardships. Disappointments are numerous and the time of learning the language is especially trying. Don't come if you want to make a great name or want to live long. Only come if you feel there is no greater honor, after living for Christ, than to die for Him. That does the trick in the end. It's not the flash in the pan, but the steady giving forth of light and the shining on and on that we need out here. Our job is to make all hear the Word and God's job is to give penetration to His Word."

Over those twenty years, Studd witnessed seasons of real outpourings of the Holy Spirit and saw real revival spread to many mission stations.

Some of his words while in Africa:

'Last June at the mouth of the Congo there were a thousand prospectors, traders, merchants and gold seekers, waiting to rush into these regions as soon as the government opened the door to them, for rumor declared that there is an abundance of gold. If such men hear so loudly the call of gold and obey it, can it be that the ears of Christ's soldiers are deaf to the call of God? Are gamblers for gold so many, and gamblers for God so few?'

'Some wish to live within the sound
Of church or chapel bell;
But I want to run a rescue shop
Within a yard of hell'.

'Let us not glide through this world and then slip quietly into heaven, without having blown the trumpet loud and long for our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Let us see to it that the devil will hold a thanksgiving service in hell, when he gets the news of our departure from the field of battle'.

In a letter written home not long before his death, C. T. gave a look back at his life:

'As I believe I am now nearing my departure from this world, I have a few things to rejoice in:
- that God called me to China and I went in spite of opposition.
- that I joyfully acted as Christ told the rich young ruler to act.
- that, at the call of God, I deliberately gave up my life to the Lord Jesus for this work in Africa, one day when I was sailing alone on the Bibby Liner in 1910, which was to be henceforth not for the Sudan only, but for the whole unevangelized world.
- my only joys therefore are that, when God has given me a work to do, I have not refused it'.

C. T. bore much fruit in Africa, even while enduring weakness, sickness and suffering several heart attacks. It was on July 16, 1931, around 10:30 am, that Charlie Studd died in the heart of Africa and was buried there. His last spoken words were, 'Hallelujah! Hallelujah'!

The evident, God-given strengths of C. T. Studd were as follows:

- courage in any emergency
- determination never to sound retreat
- a conviction that he was in God's will
- real faith that God would see him through any situation
- his contempt for depending on the arm of the flesh
- his willingness to risk all for Christ.

His own son-in-law and biographer, Norman Grubb, perhaps stated best his father-in-law's lasting legacy to the future cause of the gospel, when he wrote:
'His life will be an eternal rebuke to easy-going Christianity'.

C. T. Studd: Soldier of the Cross

'If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him'.

This statement became the driving force in the life of C. T. Studd of 19th century England. Charlie Studd was nurtured in the lap of luxury among British high society, but in his early twenties, he forsook it for the foreign mission field, ultimately becoming one of the most dedicated and sacrificial missionaries in the history of the church.

By the time he was sixteen, Charlie had become an expert cricket player, and by eighteen, he had a Cambridge career in cricket and had already become the most famous player in Britain. But that year of 1878, he came to known and love Jesus Christ. It wasn't long before the fame and notoriety did not satisfy, and C. T. was stirred to seek something higher and more eternal, as he had seen his own father do at the end of his life.

C. T. determined that his life would be consistent and fixed for one purpose in view--being obedient to God's will. He soon set himself to seek an empowering of the Holy Spirit, and before long, the love of God was poured out upon Him in fullness by an empowering of the Spirit he had not known before.

Within a few months, Charlie was burdened very specifically to make himself available for work in China. When he made this decision known, he received strong opposition from family, friends, and even other Christians. But he had come to the point that he never looked back. His guiding principle he stated in simple words: 'How can I spend the best years of my life living for the honors of this world, when thousands of souls are perishing every day?'

Charlie soon wrote to his mother: 'Mother dear, I do pray God will show you that it is such a privilege to give up a child to be used of God in saving sinners who have never heard of the name of Jesus'. Soon after this letter, he met with Hudson Taylor, who was home from China to enlist any Christian workers who felt called to go to China. It wasn't long before Studd was accepted by Taylor as a member of the China Inland Mission, along with six other young friends--M. Beauchamp, A. T. Pohill-Turner, D. E. Hoste, C. H. Pohill-Turner, W. W. Cassels, and Stanley P. Smith. Charlie and his six friends made up what was known as The Cambridge Seven, who were leaving promising careers and heading to China, which stirred the news across Britain. They set sail for China in February of 1885.

Devoted to Prayer - Al Whittinghill

-------

Devoted to Prayer

These are days, no doubt, that demand our most earnest devotion to prayer. 'In everything by prayer' is God’s plan for us. Someone has said that prayer is 'the robing room of the soul'. Prayer sends the soul aloft and is the truest worship of the sanctified will. It is like a greenhouse for our spirit. Constant trips to the invisible world in prayer will speed us along and stabilize us in our walk of faith.

The Bible tells us that David’s kingdom grew stronger and stronger, while Saul’s kingdom grew weaker and weaker. Saul is a picture of the natural man who trusted in his own natural gifting. David inquired of the Lord constantly...and when God said to him, 'Seek my face', David’s heart said to the Lord, 'Thy fac e will I seek'. Perhaps the difference between David and Saul could be summed up in David’s own words recorded in 1 Chronicles 13:3: 'And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we inquired not at it in the days of Saul'.

What an admission! No inquiry at the ark of God in the days of Saul, because he was not a man of prayer and did not seek the Lord as a way of life. We need to learn from this contrast, because we are like one of these men.

J. O. Fraser, missionary to China, once said, 'It is one of the most subtle wiles of the foe to get us occupied with superficial and surface concerns. The enemy is delighted to have us so occupied incessantly with secondary and trivial things, as long as he can keep us from attacking and resisting in the true spirit of the conflict. Weigh these words'.

May our Lord enable each of us to follow Him fully as the Spirit of God seeks to lead us into the promised land of prayer. What riches await us! Yes Lord.

The trumpet is sounding in our land, and there is a call to God’s people. Let us heed His call and respond to Him with all our hearts, for it is a call to His church.

Two From Richard Sibbes

“We are only poor for this reason, that we do not know our riches in Christ.”

—Richard Sibbes, The Bruised Reed (Edinburgh: Banner of Truth, 1998), 61

“The victory lies not with us, but with Christ, who has taken on him both to conquer for us and to conquer in us. The victory lies neither in our own strength to get it, nor in our enemies’ strength to defeat it. If it lay with us, we might justly fear. But Christ will maintain his own government in us and take our part against our corruptions. They are his enemies as well as ours.

Let us therefore be `strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might’ (Eph. 6:10). Let us not look so much at who our enemies are as at who our judge and captain is, nor at what they threaten, but at what he promises. We have more for us than against us. What coward would not fight when he is sure of victory?”

The Bottom Line: Acts 23:2-5 - Mark LaCour

-------

THE BOTTOM LINE

Mark LaCour

"The high priest Ananias commanded those standing beside him to strike him on the mouth. Then Paul said to him, "God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to try me according to the Law, and in violation of the Law order me to be struck?" But the bystanders said, "Do you revile God's high priest?" And Paul said, "I was not aware, brethren, that he was high priest; for it is written, 'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'" (Acts 23:2-5).

Tennis star Serena Williams, rap artist Kanye West, and Representative Joe Wilson are not the only ones given to public outbursts. But the apostle’s "flare-up" raises a deeper question: Should a Christian show respect toward authorities in other religions, whether the pope in Catholicism, the mullahs in Islam, the Dalai Lama in Buddhism -- or in this case, the high priest in Judaism whose time has passed? Three observations on showing public respect:

First, respect or honor should always be given to those in positions of God-ordained authority. Whether it’s the higher-ups in the state or the family, we are to honor the king and parents alike. These are God-ordained institutions, not man. To fail to respect them is to sin against the God who set them in place (Rom. 13:1; 1 Pet. 2:13-18). Paul’s apology stems from the high priest being a political ruler, not his defunct religious function.

Second, respect, or at least courtesies, should be shown to all men created in the likeness of God. Love does not act unbecomingly (1 Cor. 13:5) which means it has manners, as we’re called to be at peace with all men (Rom. 12:18). And it’s hard to be a peacemaker when you’re dissing people publically -- even when they dishonor us as Christians (1 Pet. 2:21ff.).

Lastly, while we’re never called to disrespect anyone, there are times to outwardly show respect is tantamount to siding with the enemy. While it’s proper to respect a Muslim’s freedom or his societal contribution, it isn’t proper to respect his faith -- the very thing that’s sending him to hell. There is no common ground here. To give "a greeting" (2 Jn. 10-11) or honor to any aspect of Islam is to fail at witnessing to its damning nature -- the very thing Pope Benedict XVI did in May during his visit to Jordan.

Feeding my Mormon neighbor when he’s hungry is showing respect for my fellow man; but giving him a simple handshake in his official capacity as a missionary disrespects the gospel. Always give honor to whom honor is due -- just make sure it’s due.

Let's Be Clear In Our Understanding of the Holy Spirit - Mack Tomlinson

-------

Let's Be Clear in our Understanding about the Holy Spirit

I become weary of seeing the wrong teaching that is out there among professing evangelicals regarding the Holy Spirit. It's from one extreme to the other. This Daily Thoughts is not about trying to straighten it all out. I only want to address one particular thing.

The other day while I was driving I heard a popular and very well-known radio preacher who, I believe, is a good and sincere man who tries to preach the Bible. As he was speaking about the Holy Spirit's working on David's life, he made the statement: 'But that was before Pentecost and before the Holy Spirit was really given." I immediately thought, "O boy, here we go", because I knew where he was going before he went there. I knew what he was going to say before he began to say it.

His view was that which most professing evangelicals in the 20th and 21st centuries have held, especially since the rise of dispensational teaching at the beginning of the 20th century. Here's the basic summary teaching:

1. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament period was only occasionally sent upon prophets and priests for temporary work; He never indwelt any believers in that time, but only came and went as God sovereignly purposed. No believers had the Holy Spirit until the Day of Pentecost.

2. With the coming of Pentecost, believers were for the first time indwelt by the Spirit and all believers were possessed by Him.

This view, simply put, is wrong. And I am amazed at how many true Christians still believe it. They are confused still about how people in the Old Testament were saved and knew God or if they were even truly saved at all; they are confused about what the Holy Spirit did, if anything, in the Old Testament believers.

Let me give a summary statement on this; I would encourage anyone who will be helped by this to pursue further understanding on such an important subject.

Summary

1. Both Old Testament and New Testament believers were all justified by faith alone, apart from works; the Old Testament people of Israel always had a remnant among them that truly knew the Lord and were true believers; true believers under the O T were saved by grace through faith, just like N. T. believers and had a new heart within them; this is the reason why they loved the Lord from the heart, sought the Lord, trusted and obeyed the Lord. All those in the Old Covenant who did not do these things did not know the Lord. The fact is, a majority of those in the Old Covenant were not true believers and thus they acted as they did. Only a minority remnant were true believers who did know and love the Lord. It was those alone who were justified.

2. Both believers in both the O. T. and N. T., to be justified, were all regenerated and were indwelt by the Spirit. The reason this is absolutely true is because true justification presumes and presupposes a new heart, which only comes by regeneration. If you deny that regeneration was true under the Old Covenant, then you must deny that justification was as well. But that is impossible, as we already know from the New Testament that they were justified by faith. You cannot be a believer, either in the Old or New Testament periods, without being both regenerated and justified. This is seen in a number of O. T. passages as well as N. T. passages.

This obviously does not answer every question about this great subject and will provoke a number of questions. But it amazes me at times to see how many true believers are still carrying weak and wrong teaching with them from their past on this issue and are not clear on even the basic truths. May the Lord continue to guide us into all truth.

Christ Has a Co-Pilot? - Mack Tomlinson

-------

Catholic View of Who is Man's Mediator

In response to the biblical view of Christ being the one and only Redeemer and heavenly Mediator, a Catholic gave the following response:

"One could perhaps get around concern about elevating Mary to the same redemptive level as her Son by conceiving the titles Redeemer and co-redeemer along the lines of the titles "pilot and co-pilot." A co-pilot is not the pilot, but assists him/her [...] in the job of guiding the plane and its occupants to their destination. So Christ is the unique Redeemer/pilot leading us to our final destination with the special assistance of his Mother, his subordinate co-pilot."

Quite a twisting of words--shows us how words can make heresy sound plausible and not so bad to undiscerning souls. But error is still error, regardless of how you dress it up. Such a view is nothing but blasphemy and anti-Christ. Smooth words do not change the reality of such dangerous and damning teaching.

Happy in the Lord - Mack Tomlinson

-------

Happy in the Lord

"I see more clearly than ever, that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day is to have my soul happy in the Lord."

Do you know who said this? It was not Joel Osteen in his best-seller, Your Best Life Now, or some other popular TV preacher. It was George Muller. I do agree with Muller's statement that only by being truly happy and joyful in the Lord will we glorify Him consistently. It is Him that we must seek, not only to know and glorify Him, but also because He is the only one who can do for us what Muller is recommending here.

Why is Muller right? Because when we are happy in Him, others will see the evidence of the reality of God on our lives. If am contented, peaceful, joyful, satisfied, daily walking in fullness and freshness of life, truly happy in the Lord Jesus--then will people take notice of the greatest reality--a person that is actually like God in some real measure. It is then that they cannot deny or argue with true Christianity. After all, which kind of person reflects the Lord Jesus Christ?--

1. a depressed, gloomy, sad, somber and discontented person who is always under the weight of difficulty

2. one who evidences inner reality and joyful satisfaction regardless of difficulties

If I were an unbeliever, I would be only attracted to the second kind of person and I would only be open to the faith they profess.

"Happy in the Lord."--has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

“The Lord reveal himself more and more to us in the face of his Son Jesus Christ and magnify the power of his grace in cherishing those beginnings of grace in the midst of our corruptions, and sanctify the consideration of our own infirmities to humble us, and of his tender mercy to encourage us.

And may he persuade us that, since he has taken us into the covenant of grace, he will not cast us off for those corruptions which, as they grieve his Spirit, so they make us vile in our own eyes.

And because Satan labors to obscure the glory of his mercy and hinder our comfort by discouragements, the Lord add this to the rest of his mercies, that we may not lose any portion of comfort that is laid up for us in Christ.

And, may he grant that the prevailing power of his Spirit in us should be an evidence of the truth of grace begun, and a pledge of final victory, at that time when he will be all in all, in all his, for all eternity. Amen.”

Audio From Student Bible Study on 9.6.09

-------

This past Sunday saw the beginning of the student Bible studies held Sunday evenings in the home of Charles and Mona Leiter. I don't know if every study will be recorded, but the one from this past Sunday was. You can listen to it below, or download the MP3 (175 MB) HERE.

Questions discussed were:

1) How do you know if you should stay where you are, or if you should be the one to bring the gospel to the unreached parts of the earth?

2) Heb. 5:8-9 "Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things
which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all
those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation." What does it
mean Christ was "made perfect" and how did He "learn obedience"?

What God did when the Going was Hard

Duncan Campbell tells of a particular Hebrides Revival experience. What a blessing. Praise to our God. He still chooses to reveal himself to infants.

"... But I am on this island, and I felt the going fearfully hard. Oh, it was difficult to preach--you felt your very words coming back and hitting you. And I was a bit distressed. I turned to one of the other ministers and I said, "Now don't you think that we should send for the praying men of Barvas?" Let me say in passing that the praying men of Barvas were praying for us just now, there were at least five of them in this part of God's vineyard who promised to do that and I believe they were keeping to their promise. However, I sent for them and in the conversation that I had with this businessman, one of the praying men, I said, "If it is at all possible will you bring little Donald Mc_____." Now I will tell you later how Donald came to know the Lord. But bring him.

Now Donald had a remarkable experience on the hillside a fortnight after he was born again. And God came upon him--the Holy Ghost came upon him. He had a mighty baptism. I hope you believe in the baptism of the Holy Ghost as a distinct experience. You may disagree, but I believe in it. I don't think that I am preaching one set of doctrine that insists upon gifts. I am not thinking of that at all because I believe that the baptism of the Holy Ghost in its final analysis is just the revelation of Jesus. It is Jesus becoming real-wonderful, powerful, and dynamic in my life. And He expressing Himself through my personality. That is the baptism of the Holy Ghost that I believe in. Not that I disbelieve in anything. Of course I don't. Some of my dearest friends are among those who exercise the gifts. But that, by the way, this young fellow had such a baptism of God among the heather, that he forgot about coming home and a search party had to be sent out to find him in the hills. And they found him on his face among the heather repeating over and over, "Oh, Jesus, I love You. Oh, Jesus I love You." And wasn't he near to Jesus if he spoke like that? He was, of course.

Well, I asked the men to bring little Donald with them. And now we are in the service in the church. And I am preaching from the text, "Who is this that cometh from Edom . . . this that is glorious in his apparel traveling in the greatness of his strength. I that speak in righteousness am mighty to save" that was the text. But oh, I tell you, the going was hard. The going was hard. I looked down and I saw little Donald sitting there in the seat. And I saw that his head was bowed and I saw that the floor was wet with his tears. And I said to myself, "Well, now, there is a young lad nearer to God that you or I. Oh, there is a young lad who is in touch with God." And I stopped preaching. And looking down at this young lad, I said, "Donald, I believe God would have you lead us in prayer. " It was right in the midst of my address. And that young lad stood to his feet.

Now that morning at family worship they were reading Rev 4 where John has the vision of the open door. "I saw a door opened in heaven." And as that young man stood, that vision came before him. And this is what he said in his prayers. "God, I seem to be gazing in through the open door. And I seem to see the Lamb standing in the midst of the Throne. He has the keys of death and of hell at his girdle(?)." Then he stopped and began to weep. And for a minute or so he wept and he wept. Oh, the brokenness. And when he was able to control himself, he lifted his eyes towards the heavens and he cried out, "God, there is power there-let it loose! Let it loose!" And suddenly, the power of God fell upon the congregation. Of course in Lewis and in other islands of the Hebrides, they stand to pray, they sit to sing. And now, one side of the church threw their hands up like this. Threw their heads back and you would almost declare that they were in an epileptic fit, but they were not. Oh, I can't explain it. And the other side they slumped on top of each other. But God, the Holy Ghost moved. Those who had their hands like this stayed that way for two hours. Now you try to remain like that with your hands up for a few minutes and you will find it hard-but you would break their hands before you could take them down. Now, I can't explain it-this is what happened.

But the most remarkable thing that night was what took place in a village seven miles away from the church. There wasn't a single person from that village in the church. Not one single person. Seven miles away, it was a while away certainly but while Donald Mc_____ was praying, the power of God swept through __________, that's the name of the village. Swept through the village and I know it to be a fact that there wasn't a single house in the village that hadn't a soul saved in it. Not a single house in the village. ... "
