"Gladly Thou divine son of Mercy, had I said something great of thee. At times I thought I saw, in the flashing light of a blessed hour, thy divine majesty adorned in spotless purity; but as I was about to fix the holy vision, the pencil trembled in my unskilled hand, and I could give only a pale outline. Who are we that attempt to describe thy holiness!"
One of Schaff's main points, in attesting to the reality of Christ, is that you are dealing with a person beyond comprehension, let alone human creation. Fishermen don't make up stories containing a person so great that their readers are overwhelmed in attempts to take him in and analyze him. The person of Christ showcased in the gospels leaves men trembling, without any sense of worth or ability describe him. There is no other figure or hero in history like this.
