The Lord's Prayer

Chalk another evening well-spent at the Leiter home. Charles surveyed the Lord's prayer (more properly - the disciple's prayer). One insight from the many...

In this prayer, physical needs are mentioned before the spiritual. Daily bread is mentioned before daily forgiveness. The first suggests our creatureliness, the second our sinfulness. Why this order? Apart from sin, we would still be absolutely dependent. Man at his best is only a creature. Therefore, "give us this day our daily bread" is an expression of reality - namely, I am needy apart even without my failures. I am creature. He is Creator. And with the Psalmist we affirm, "The eyes of all look to You."

The flow is purposeful, never departing from a God-centered pattern for prayer. First, I extol God as my Creator. Next, I extol God as my Redeemer. How glorious!
